About Laura Finney
I’ve been asking myself what I would want to know about a person I was considering hiring as a realtor, and while I would certainly want to read her (preferably stellar) reviews and might possibly consult selected referrals; what I would really want to know lies beyond the customary boilerplate employed in a company bio. So here is a bit of both...
My History - I was born in Baltimore and have spent most of my life here. I got a bachelors degree from Gettysburg College after majoring in African & African-American Studies, but had little idea of what I wanted to do with the rest of my life beyond that. After writing a couple of oral histories (signed copies available upon request) of beloved institutions and spending more time as a seasonal steeplechase photographer, it became apparent that I was looking for a more dynamic career.
As I was considering my next step, I ran into an old friend who needed some help with her real estate business. So after one excessively tedious course and the completely non-sensical exam later, I was a licensed Realtor. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best in the business while also having learned some of the best lessons from some of the worst in the business. I’ve found that I love touring homes and (on a slightly more practical level) I often surmise that had I not earned my license as a Realtor, I might have pursued a side career in breaking and entering. In fact, I’ve enjoyed real estate so much that I’ve recently extended my reach to include Massachusetts, where I have summered since childhood.
My Family - I married my husband, Michael Finney, in 1998 (and yes, we have actually managed to spend 24 years not killing each other) who brought with him a son, Ryder, who believes I am the best stepmother ever. I’m not sure that he’s ever uttered those exact words, but I think I can read between the lines. Michael and I also have a daughter, Ralston, who is a rising senior art student at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) and has therefore (inexplicably) dyed her hair white in the traditional way of her cadre. When I’m not wearing the RE hat, I enjoy walking my (inexhaustible?) dogs and playing (at) tennis. That means not particularly well, but with undiminished enthusiasm.
Thanks for making it to the end, and while I’ll own that this isn’t your typical Realtor bio, I would also note that it does at least offer unimpeachable candor and complete veracity.
p.s. - those are two of those “beyond the boilerplate” qualities that I would want to find in my Realtor.
